“After seeing how fun it is to watch that particular level of acting on the small screen, the producers of the classic series have started making inquiries about whether the actors are available for a reunion.”
Breakers was a television series that was aired by the Ten Network in 1998 and 1999.
The series was set in a building known as “The Breakers” building, located near Bondi Beach. Three businesses were run from that building, all operated by the same family. These consisted of a modelling school, a local newspaper office and a cafe.
The series because very well known for the unique acting style that featured throughout, and the emotion-heavy dialogue that was handed to actors who were comically ill-equipped to handle it. It was car-crash television that developed cult status at the time. It had a similar feel to Tommy Wiseau’s “The Room”.
Generally, everyone had forgotten about Breakers until a few scenes of “banter” between Ines Basic and her love interest Sam on Married At First Sight struck a hauntingly similar note.
Executive producer of Breakers, David Gould, informs Coastal Tribune that he felt a giant pang of nostalgia as soon as the MAFS pair started flirting.
“I was watching a scene where Ines was explaining to Sam that he is an 'elegant' wine drinker. It was this sort of comically unconvincing dialogue that makes you squirm in your chair. So unconvincing that you sort of laugh and shudder at the same time. It’s disturbing and uncomfortable but you need to keep watching. It made me yearn for my days producing Breakers”
He says that he started planning a Breakers reunion as soon as he finished watching that scene.
“Oh deadset within an hour of that episode airing, I had half the cast committed to the reunion. Turns out they’re generally not too busy actually. We didn't exactly need to organise flights back from Hollywood. Put it that way.”
Gould is understood to have loved the skin-crawling uncomfortable feeling he experienced as Ines and Sam delivered their lines, and felt they must have subconsciously been channeling his old show's vibe.
"It was so great. I particularly love the way the conversation was so stilted and uncomfortable, and yet they were saying things like 'I love the way the conversation just flows when I'm around you.' It's awful and deliciously ironic and it just takes me right back to the 90s. I've even asked Ines and Sam to guest star in the revamped Breakers, as well as that virgin kid who kept blinking in silence when put on the spot. It's going to be fantastic."
The Breakers reunion series is slated to air in October this year.
