“Every time we post anything. Like literally anything. Ellen will be there commenting. I always thought she was an old family friend of my wife, and apparently she thought the same thing about me. We’re gonna ask our parents and try to figure this out.”

When Adam and Lee Kensington post something on Facebook, they can normally expect quite a few likes if it’s a particularly interesting post or nice photo. If not, they’ll just grab a like from their most loyal friends and family.

That usually includes their siblings, step siblings, parents and besties. Oh and Ellen. She’s always posting something lovely like:

“Looking amazing lovebirds! xoxo”

It’s always good for morale, particularly when the post isn’t getting a lot of love.

So the other day, when Adam posted a really lame joke about politics, he mentioned to Lee that he could at least expect a sympathy react from her mate Ellen.

“My mate Ellen? Isn’t she your old family friend? I thought she must be really close with your mum or something?”

But nope. Neither of them had ever met her. In an all-too-common scenario, women of a certain vintage have a little trouble distinguishing between people they’ve actually met, and people they’ve seen a lot of through mutual Facebook connections.

For those playing at home, after much investigation, Ellen turned out to be a lady who played tennis with Lee’s mum. She sees when Lee’s mum comments on a post and jumps right in.

But before we even think about mocking the Ellens of this world, ask yourself one question. Just how crucial are those likes and comments from that random almost-acquaintance such as Ellen?

Because if you’re anything like Adam and Lee, they are absolutely crucial. Particularly when a post misses the mark.
